One for the true heads here. 2020 is going to be an amazing year for fans of Japanese skateboard videos, as Takahiro Morita starts to reissue the entire back catalogue of his Far East Skate Network's videos.
We start where it all began, 1995's Far East Skate Network, the first skate video to come out of Japan. Takahiro had no experience in filming, editing, design or anything else that went into putting out a skate video. Produced after hours at his friends high school on their editing equipment after saving up for a second hand Sony Handycam Pro VX-1. Takahiro modelled his first video on early issues of 411VM with the video split into 4 main parts with a commercial break just like 411.
A Rookie part from Keishi Tsuchiya that was hugely influential on the Japanese scene alongside a sponsored skaters section with Daisuke Hayakawa, Akira Ozawa, Hiroshi Izumi, Chris Gentry, Ronnie Bertino, Takeshi Takahashi and more. There's a non sponsored section with, amongst others, Kenro Yamamoto, Satoru Taguchi, Nobuyuki and Masahiko Mori. There's also a report from the West Area with some amazing contest footage. Street, vert and contests are all covered, and Christian Hosoi even makes an appearance.
45 minutes with a 16 minute documentary on the making of the video including interviews with Takahiro Morita and Keishi Tsuchiya. Comes with a full colour 16 page insert.
Takahiro has begun to make available an amazing part of Japanese skateboard history, and many of these early videos won't have been seen before by many of those of us outside of Japan. If for no other reason it is worth the cover price for the soundtrack and outfits alone. As mentioned at the start, due to the price this is no doubt one for the true video heads and collectors, but if that describes you do not miss the opportunity to see this part of our history more than likely for the first time.
